Everything you need to know about using Glowsmith to create hyper-interactive AI-powered lessons.

What is Glowsmith?

Glowsmith is an AI-native platform that helps educators create hyper-interactive lessons on any subject. Instead of spending hours building slides, worksheets, and quizzes, you describe what you want to teach and Glowsmith generates a complete, structured lesson with interactive pages, scorable questions, and visual aids.

Each lesson is composed of multiple pages, each containing HTML, CSS, and JS that runs in a sandboxed iframe. This means lessons can include anything from simple text and images to fully interactive SVG animations, Canvas demos, and embedded Desmos graphing calculators.

Creating your first lesson

  1. Go to your dashboard and click on the chat input at the bottom.
  2. Describe the lesson you want to create. For example: “Create a 5-page lesson on the Pythagorean theorem for 8th graders.”
  3. Wait a few seconds while the AI generates your lesson. You'll see it appear as an interactive artifact above the chat.
  4. Review the lesson. Each page is a self-contained interactive slide with content, visuals, and questions.
  5. If you want changes, just describe what to modify. The AI will edit the lesson while preserving your previous customizations.

Understanding the interface

The Glowsmith dashboard is split into three main areas:

  • Sidebar — Navigate between chats, assignments, classrooms, and account settings. Your chat history is listed here.
  • Chat area — The main workspace where you interact with the AI. Type your requests and view generated lessons as rich, interactive artifacts.
  • Lesson viewer — Generated lessons appear above the chat. You can navigate between pages, interact with elements, and test questions.

Generating lessons with AI

Glowsmith's AI generates complete lesson artifacts containing multiple pages. Each page can include:

  • Rich text content with formatting
  • Interactive 2D illustrations using SVG or Canvas
  • HTML/CSS demos and visualizations
  • Scorable questions (multiple choice, dropdown, drag-and-drop)
  • Desmos graphing calculator integrations with auto-grading

You can specify the number of pages, the target grade level, the subject, and any specific requirements. The AI handles the rest.

Editing and customizing

To edit a generated lesson, simply describe what you want to change. For example:

  • “Make the third question harder”
  • “Add a diagram to page 2”
  • “Change the color scheme to blue”
  • “Add a Desmos graph showing y = x²”

The AI produces minimal patches, preserving your previous customizations. You can iterate as many times as you need.

Adding interactive elements

Glowsmith supports several types of interactive elements that you can include in lessons:

  • Multiple choice questions — Students select from options. Auto-graded with correct/incorrect feedback.
  • Dropdown questions — Students pick from a dropdown menu. Great for fill-in-the-blank style questions.
  • Drag-and-drop questions — Students drag items into the correct order or category.
  • Desmos graph blocks — Interactive graphing calculator with optional auto-grading by comparing expected graph state.
  • 2D illustrations — SVG or Canvas-based interactive diagrams and visualizations.

Using Desmos graphs

Desmos graphs are a powerful feature of Glowsmith. The AI can generate interactive graphing calculator widgets that are embedded directly into your lessons. Students can manipulate graphs, plot points, and explore mathematical concepts interactively.

You can also create graph-based questions with auto-grading. The system compares the student's graph state against the expected answer to determine correctness.

To add a Desmos graph, simply ask the AI to include one. For example: “Add a Desmos graph showing the function f(x) = sin(x) and ask students to find the period.”

Available AI models

Glowsmith uses OpenRouter to provide access to 50+ AI models from multiple providers. Models are organized into quality tiers:

  • Free models — Available to all users on the Free plan. Includes models like Nemotron 3 Ultra, DeepSeek, Llama, and Qwen.
  • Premium models — Available to Pro subscribers. Higher quality outputs for complex lessons.
  • Ultra models — The most capable models including GPT-4.1, Claude Opus, and Gemini. Available to Pro subscribers.

You can switch between models at any time from the model picker in the dashboard.

Token usage and billing

Pro subscriptions include 30,000 tokens per month. Tokens are used for AI model requests and scale with the complexity of your lessons and the model you choose.

If you exceed your included tokens, you can purchase additional token packs separately. You only pay for what you use beyond your monthly allowance, with no hard caps or service interruptions.

Creating a classroom

Classrooms are how you organize students and assign lessons. To create one:

  1. Navigate to Classrooms in the sidebar.
  2. Click Create Classroom and give it a name and description.
  3. Invite students by sharing the classroom link or adding them directly.

For a detailed walkthrough, see the Classroom Guide.

Inviting students

Students can join your classroom through an invite link. Once they join, they appear in the classroom roster where you can track their progress and grades. Students access their assignments through their own dashboard view.

Creating assignments

Assignments link your generated lessons to your classroom. To create one:

  1. From a classroom, click Create Assignment.
  2. Select a lesson artifact from your chat history.
  3. Choose which students to assign it to.
  4. Set a due date and publish date if desired.
  5. Publish the assignment. Students will see it in their dashboard.

Grading and feedback

When students complete assignments, their answers are automatically graded. You can view results in the assignment detail page, including:

  • Overall score (percentage)
  • Correct, incorrect, partial, and unanswered breakdowns
  • Individual student submissions with their answers
  • Attempt tracking with timestamps

Managing your account

You can manage your account settings from the Account page in the dashboard. This includes updating your profile, managing authentication providers, and viewing your subscription status.

Subscription and billing

Your subscription and billing information is available in the dashboard. You can upgrade to Pro, view your token usage, and manage payment methods. All billing is handled securely through our payment provider.
